Getting the size right

• Toe first, heel last. Work the front of the cover over the toe of the shoe, then stretch the back up and over the heel in one motion. Trying to pull the whole thing on at once is what tears them.
• Pull from the body, not the edge. Grab a broad section of the cover rather than pinching the thin rim. Edge-pulling is how covers develop small tears that turn into leaks.
• Peel off from the heel. Reverse the process — roll the heel down and off, then slide the toe free. Doing it over a doormat means the water stays outside.

Keeping them alive

Rinse them under the tap after a muddy or salty day, shake them out, and hang them to dry inside out before folding them away. Salt and grit are what age silicone, not water. Store them dry — a damp cover folded in a bag for a week will start to smell, and that smell doesn't come out easily.

Don't leave them baking on a car dashboard in summer sun, and keep them away from the radiator you were tempted to use as a dryer. Heat is the one thing that genuinely shortens their life.
